Maureen Alina (Marie) Toomath: 4 Mar 1922 - 2012

Maureen, or Marie as everyone called her, was born on 4 Mar 1922 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She spent less than two years in Ireland before coming to Canada. Even though she was less than two years old when she and her family left Ireland, Marie said she felt right at home when she returned to her ancestral home many years later. Growing up during the Great Depression on Queen Street, Toronto, taught Marie the value of money and to not waste anything. Homemade soda bread cooked in left over bacon fat was a staple growing up. She remembered that a nice treat on a hot summer afternoon was to get a piece of fresh tar from the road workers and chew on it.

Marie married Roy Harrison on 10 Jan 1940 and together they had three children; Daniel, Patricia and Shawn. Marie lived in Toronto, Trenton, Mississauga and Wasaga Beach. In her final years she spent a few days a week at a seniors home in Collingwood doing crafts and playing bingo. Until her eyesight faded she enjpyed making soda bread and her famous butter tarts. Marie also loved the outdoors, where she would spend hours feeding the birds and "puttering around" in her garden.
